Happy Birthday to Me

When I was younger, I used to love announcing to everyone that it was my birthday. Today, I wasn’t going to say anything, but as I taught cycling, my kids burst into the room, along with their Kids in Motion classmates, and shouted, “Happy Birthday!” Very sweet.

Wes may have established a new tradition: art as gift. Last year, we picked up two great paintings by Erik Niemi and called them my present. This year, a Sutapa Das, “Dynamic Field.” Toppy, as I call her, paints one dot at a time, using tiny brushes. Check her out.

Proving once again that it’s the intangibles that matter, I enjoyed well-behaved children at a restaurant lunch, and I’m looking forward to having our bike-fiend friends Bryan and Susan swap saddles from my road bike to my tri bike. (It’s an easy operation, but better to leave it to the experts.)

Happy Birthday, Sage! Hope the rest of your day holds more surprises just as nice as that of your girls and their classmates bursting in.

Those paintings are amazing. If her work is still on display at the library as her site says it is, I’ll be sure to get over there to see it in person!
