My current editing project is a great book on the lifestyle publications of the 1970s, written by a sociologist who’s probably about my age. He describes the 1970s project of self-invention and self-definition through style of life, with in-depth studies of books and magazines on such topics as Rolfing and geodesic domes. The 1970s saw a big shift from credentialed experts giving advice to folks giving advice from lived experience.
He’s talking about ME. Well, me thirty years ago. It’s making me self-conscious.
