Tri to End Homelessness

My friends Robyn and Rachel have a special tri-season goal, as described below. Please consider making a donation.

Dear Friends and Family,

“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.” —Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

We need your help! As many of you know, we’re sisters, social justice advocates, and triathletes. This year we’re dedicating our triathlon season to ending homelessness.

Throughout the 2007 season we’ll be raising awareness about the reality of homelessness in our hometown and raising money for Genesis Home—a shelter for homeless families and young women in Durham, North Carolina .

Our dual goals are to (1) raise $2,500 by our first race of the season: the Valdese, North Carolina sprint triathlon on April 14 and (2) successfully complete our first international distance triathlon in Pinehurst, North Carolina on October 6. Along the way we’ll be documenting our training journey and fundraising successes on our blog: http://tritoendhomelessness.blogspot.com.

Here’s where you can help us make a difference: Every dollar contributed to Genesis Home through our campaign will be matched by a local foundation!

Because of this matching grant, your $10 really means $20 toward clean sheets and a bus pass for a single mother of two staying at Genesis Home while she works and saves money for a deposit on her next apartment. Your $50 really means $100 toward GED program tuition for a young woman who has aged-out of foster care and is transitioning into adulthood. Your $250 really means $500 for the counseling and support a grandmother and her three grandchildren need to move out of homelessness and into a home of their own.

Genesis Home works to end homelessness for families with children, and for young people, by providing housing and supportive services to foster independence. In 2006, Genesis Home provided long-term shelter for 32 families—including 53 children—and three young women. You can learn more about Genesis Home at: http://www.genesishome.org.

Please join us in supporting this organization that is ending homelessness one family at a time. You can sponsor our race season and make a tax-deductible online contribution to Genesis Home at: http://www.genesishome.org/events/donation.html.
