Is Online Yoga Teacher Training Worth It? What Happens Inside One

by | Oct 5, 2026

If you have a browser tab open to an online 200-hour yoga teacher training and a second tab open to “is online yoga teacher training worth it,” I’d like to give you the answer I’d give a friend across the kitchen table: it depends on what happens inside the training, and you can find that out before you pay.

I’ve been teaching yoga since 2003 and training yoga teachers since 2011, and I’ve run that training in a studio and now entirely online. The format is the least interesting part! What makes a training worth your hours is the same in every room: a structure you can repeat, practice teaching with real humans, and feedback from someone who has watched a lot of first classes.

Worth it when three things are true

A training earns its keep when it gives you a clear, repeatable way to build a class. Think of it as a recipe you can cook a hundred times and season differently each night, rather than a binder of sequences you’ll never open again. Mine is the 6–4–2 Framework, and by week three my students are planning classes from it without looking at their notes.

It earns its keep when you teach, out loud, to people who are asking the same “who am I to do this?” question you are. Watching videos of a teacher is practice for watching videos. Cueing a breath to a person on a screen who then takes the breath, that’s practice for teaching.

And it earns its keep when someone with experience watches you teach and tells you what they saw. Not “great job!” (though you’ll get that too), but “you cued the left side twice and the right side once, and here’s a way to catch that.” That kind of feedback is the whole reason to pay for a training instead of reading the books, and I say that as someone who wrote the books.

A training is not worth it when it is a video library with a certificate at the end. You can tell from the sales page: if nobody ever watches you teach, keep looking. I wrote a longer guide to telling the two apart in how to choose an online yoga teacher training.

What a week looks like inside a live online cohort

Since the format is what people worry about, I’ll describe mine. The Comfort Zone Yoga 200-hour online yoga teacher training meets live once a week, for twelve weeks, on Google Meet for about two and a half hours, on a weeknight the cohort sets together once everyone is enrolled. That’s the one fixed appointment. Everything else, the lectures, the reading, the written work, the practicum log, runs on your own clock, whenever your week has room for it.

The kitchen table is where most of it happens. This fall, three of the eight students in the cohort have joined live calls with their children in their laps, and it has been one of my favorite parts of the cohort. They’re welcome exactly as they are (there’s a mute button for the moments a parent wants one, and that’s rare). I built this training for adults with full lives, because that’s who has always shown up wanting to teach. A full life isn’t a reason to wait; it’s the life you’ll be teaching from.

The curriculum opens the day you’re accepted, so you can start slowly over the winter and walk into the first live call already warmed up, and after graduation you get six months in the Prep Station, my weekly teaching-tip membership, while you teach your first real classes.

The question under the question

Most people typing “is it worth it” are also asking something they’d never put in a search bar: who am I to teach this? I’ve heard that question from nearly every yoga teacher I admire, usually right before they signed up. It isn’t a disqualification so much as a big green flag: it shows you understand what you’re taking on.

A good training doesn’t answer that question for you. Rather, it hands you the tools to answer it yourself: the structure, the practice, and the feedback I described above. Twelve weeks later you’re standing (or sitting, with a toddler) in front of a room, and the question has changed to “what do these students need next?” That shift is the transformation, and it’s why the feedback loop matters more than the video count.

How to tell before you pay

Ask three things of any online training, and ask them by email if the sales page doesn’t say. How many times will I teach to live people, and who watches? What framework will I leave with, and can you describe it in one sentence? And what happens after graduation, when I’m teaching my first class on a Tuesday night with no one watching? If the answers are specific, the training is probably worth it. If they’re vague, you already know.

If you’d like to feel how I teach before you decide anything, start with Find Your Teaching Voice, a free short course inside the Zone that is one full unit of the 200-hour curriculum rather than a preview of it.

The next Comfort Zone Yoga 200-hour online yoga teacher training meets live February–April 2027. Applications open October 19, and the waitlist gets first word plus the early-bird rate. Join the waitlist for the February 2027 cohort, and if you’re not sure this is your moment, that’s fine. The waitlist is a good place to keep thinking about it.
